Healthy Living

So just how healthy are you? Not too bad?  Still play a bit of football now and again, but not as much as when you were younger?  Or no idea?

Its amazing how many of us just don't bother to look after the most important thing we have, our health.  Looking after yourself can alter your whole outlook on life, give you more energy and more importantly, be around a bit longer to enjoy life to the full.

Some of us even put our health at risk through poor diet, binge drinking or using drugs.

This section of the site is designed to give you some brief pointers on how to look after yourself and, more importantly, to point you in the direction of some organisations who can help you out.

Your Child's Health

Any issue relating to your child's health can be a worry for parents  - whether you're a new parent or experienced in dealing with children's illnesses - in the Your Child's Health Section we provide links to some useful websites.

Healthy Eating

Healthy Eating - We all know the saying, you are what you eat and  a good diet is central to overall good health. But which are the best foods to include in your meals, and which ones are best avoided?

Smoking

Quit smoking - Giving up smoking can reduce the risk of developing many smoking related illnesses. And its never too late, within 10-15 years of giving up, an ex-smokers' risk of developing lung cancer is only slightly greater than someone who has never smoked.

Healthy Heart

Healthy Heart - The British Heart Foundation highlight five key steps to a healthy heart that can be included in your everyday life.  Once you've seen what they are you'll realize a lot of them are just common sense and working towards keeping a healthy heart is easy.

Healthy Eating

Healthy Eating - How much fruit and vegetables do you eat a day?  One piece?  The odd apple and some vegetables?  Only on  a sunday alongside roast beef, yorkshire puddings and gravy?  For a healthier lifestyle you should be eating 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day in order to reduce the risks of cancer and coronary heart disease and many other chronic diseases.

Drinking Sensibly

Drinking Sensibly - Noone is trying to spoil your fun or saying you should never drink.  But everyone, regardless of age or whether they "can handle it" should always drink sensibly.

Dealing with Drugs

Dealing with Drugs - How can you tell if someone is using drugs or alcohol? It is often difficult because changes in mood or attitudes, unusual temper outbursts, changes in sleeping habits and changes in socialising or other interests can be caused by a variety of different things. What should you look for?

If you'd like to keep track of any fitness or diet plans you may be following, and just how successful it is, you can store all your relevant medical information online at the NHS Healthspace Website (external link)
