Transport and the Streets

Chester is one of the premiere tourist destinations in the UK, but such popularity, combined with the many people who work in the city on a day to day basis means it can sometimes get rather busy!

As well as the many roads in and around the city, there are footpaths, bike paths and bridleways criss crossing across the Cheshire Countryside.

Parking and Car Parks - whether you're a visitor or a resident, you'll find some sound advice on where you can and can't park here.

Sat Nav Users - More and more drivers are relying on satellite navigation and GPS systems to get them to their desired destination.  To help you find your way to Chester's Car Parks and Park and Ride stations, we've included details of the relevant postcodes to make your trip even easier.

Park and Ride - take the stress out of visiting Chester by using the Park and Ride.  Leave your car outside the city centre and get one of the buses, that runs every 15 minutes, into town.

Public Toilets - details of lavatories in Chester City.

Cycle Routes - Cycling is fast becoming one of Britain's most popular leisure and sport pastimes. However more and more people are deciding to leave their cars at home and use their bikes for the journey to work.  Find out where Cheshire best cycle routes are.

Public Transport - let someone else take the strain and use one of the many bus and train routes into the city.

Bus Routes - Maps of all services and routes in a range of Cheshire towns are now available

Roads, Highways and Pavements - Road and Highway maintenance throughout the Chester District is dealt with by Cheshire County Council's Highways Department who are committed to ensuring that Cheshire's roads and pavements are safe and well-maintained whilst continually improving the highway network as part of the integrated transport system.

Street Lighting - There are approximately 80,000 street lights and illuminated traffic signs on County highways in Cheshire and the County Council do their best to keep them all in good order.   If you see a faulty one, however, you can report it here.

Road Safety - As part of the Government's strategy, their aim is to cut the number of deaths and serious injuries from road accidents by 40% by 2010. Learn how, here.

Pedestrianisation Scheme - Chester's pedestrianisation scheme has been in operation since 1995, and has helped to make the City centre a better and friendlier place for pedestrians, residents and visitors by reducing traffic and the associated danger, noise and fumes.

Roadworks - They may annoy and frustrate, and sometimes you may even think that fate has conspired against you to put roadworks in the middle of an important trip, but there's no denying the work has to be done.

Abnormal loads - An abnormal load is a "load that cannot without undue expense or risk or damage be divided into two or more loads for the purpose of being carried on a road"

Crossing patrols - There are a series of crossing patrols throughout Chester designed to aid people - specifically children travelling to and from work - to cross particularly busy stretches of roads.

Winter roads and gritting - Ensuring Cheshire's roads are gritted on time so drivers can use them is an important element of the Cheshire Highway Department's work.
