Research and Statistics

What does the Research and Intelligence team do?

The Research and Intelligence team was set up in 1997 to provide comprehensive research to inform Council decision-making.  The information provided helps the Council and others with an interest in Chester District, to understand the social, economic and demographic characteristics and trends of Chester and its surrounding area.

Research and Intelligence is therefore involved in:

  • Collating and interpreting information and statistics and advising others on their use
  • Survey work to find out the views of the local community
  • Producing indicators to monitor the performance of the Council against its Corporate Plan
  • Providing training and advice to others on undertaking research
  • Evaluating the services provided by Chester City Council
  • Working with partners on a range of joint projects

The people that make use of the Research and Intelligence services include:

  • Elected Councillors
  • Residents
  • Other Council departments
  • Central Government
  • Consultants
  • Other Public Sector organisations (For example, the NHS)
  • Students
  • Businesses
  • Voluntary Sector organisations
  • The media (For example, local newspapers)

Amongst other things, these people use research information to:

  • Make sure people get the services they need
  • Make a case for new money to provide for Chester's needs
  • To check that the right services are being provided to the right people at the right time and in the right place
  • To make the best decisions
