Strays

As from April 2008 Police Stations will no longer accept stray dogs.

If you find a stray dog during office hours Monday to Friday you should contact Chester Dog Warden on 01244 402304.

Outside office hours, please contact the council "out of hours" call centre for advice on 01244 402477.

An injured stray dog found outside office hours may be reported to the RSPCA on 0870 55 55 999.

Dangerous dogs and dogs that are worrying livestock should be reported to your local Police.

Lost, stolen or found dogs should be reported to both the Police and the Dog Warden Service.

By law, a dog must wear a tag bearing its owner's name and address whenever it is in a public place.

Strays - give a dog a home

Stray dogs are looked after by Barra Boarding Kennels, Parkgate Road, Chester. (Tel:01244 880837)

The best time to call is between 2pm and 4pm including weekends (although viewing may end earlier at weekends or in the winter when it gets dark earlier).  The dogs cost £52 and a home check may be required.  The fee includes micro-chipping of the dog.  Kennel staff and proprietors will tell you all they know about any particular dog but cannot absolutely guarantee how a dog will behave once it is in a new home.  Dogs that have been kennelled for a while need some time and patience to adjust.  Training classes are a useful means of improving your new dog's behaviour.

All payments are effectively made to the council and cheques must be made out to the council, although all transactions take place at the kennels.  No dog can be released to their owners until all agreed fees have been paid (The Environmental Protection (Stray Dogs) Regulations 1992).  Unfortunately we cannot accept installments.
