Air Quality - Smoky Diesels

All diesels produce some smoke when they are started and during acceleration. Poorly maintained diesel engines produce many times more pollution than well maintained vehicles. The smoke that is produced is extremely unpleasant to breathe and dirties buildings.

The council would like your help in identifying smoky buses and lorries and reporting the details to the Vehicle and Operator Service Agency.

The information that is required to trace the vehicle operator is

  • Type of Vehicle (e.g. HGV or a Passenger Service Vehicle)
  • The vehicle's registration number
  • Company Name (if apparent)
  • Road Name/Number where vehicle seen
  • When you saw the vehicle (date and time)
  • Your name and address (not compulsory and is confidential)

This information can then be either:

  • phoned to the Vehicle Operator Services Agency on 0870 6060 440,
  • faxed to 01792 454313 with 'Smoky Vehicles' in the subject line
  • emailed to enquiries@vosa.gov.uk with 'Smoky Vehicles' in the subject line
  • or posted to:
