Energy Efficiency

The council is committed to reducing energy consumption across the district and saving our residents money. The best way to save energy is to insulate your property. We offer grants for loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, solar water and heating, ground source heat pumps, wind power and renewable loft insulations. Below are listed the grants available.

Insulation Scheme - Spot the Difference

We are offering a £100 grant off either loft insulation or cavity wall insulation.  We have negotiated rates which are below national average for these measures and you will then have the £100 grant discounted from these already low prices.  

If you are installing both insulation measures, you will be able to apply for £100 off each measure. 

Details of the scheme are given below, or alternatively you can request a pack by phoning 01244-402181.  The pack contains details of the scheme, a list of contractors and an application form.  

The address and telephone number of the contractors taking part in the scheme are given below.

Once you have obtained your quote(s), please send it / them, along with your application form to the address given on the form. When we have received the application form and quote(s), we will be back in touch to tell you which contractor will be doing the work, and they will be in touch with you direct to arrange for the work to be done.  You will pay the contractor the price of the work less the £100 grant. 

TIPS WHEN SEEKING QUOTATIONS FROM INSULATION CONTRACTORS 

1. Telephone any of the seven listed contractors and ask them to provide you with a written quotation for the insulation measures you would like to have carried out. 

2. Loft insulation: - If you have 4 inches (100 mm) thickness of loft insulation or less you will benefit from topping this up to 10 inches (250 mm) thickness. 

If you have an un-insulated cold water tank and your loft hatch is not currently insulated, ask for the cost of insulating these to be included in your quotation. 

If you have very old disintegrating insulation in your loft they may be prepared to remove this before laying a new insulation quilt, but you will need to check that this is possible. 

3. Cavity wall insulation: - This is usually done by the contractor drilling holes at approx. 1.5 metre spacings, injecting the insulation material into the cavity and repairing the mortar holes. 

Ask what insulation material the contractor proposes to use - This is usually a dry mineral fibre material or Rockwool.  As if they provide a written guarantee covering the efficiency of the insulation and against their work causing future problems, also how long does the guarantee last. 

Ask about the size of the holes to be drilled, whether they can match the mortar repairs to the same colour as your existing mortar, and that they will point this neatly when they have finished insulating the walls. 

4. Ask how long the work will take to complete. 
Loft insulation top-ups are usually completed within half a day or less. 
cavity fill work is usually completed in a day or less.
