Housing FAQs

What council houses are available?

There are no longer any "council houses" in Chester. Chester City Council transferred its housing stock to the Chester & District Housing Trust (external link)in 2000.  CDHT are now responsible for   was set up to receive the housing stock formerly owned by the City Council. It is non-profit making and is regulated by the Housing Corporation as a registered social landlord (RSL).  All enquiries relating to low cost housing in the district should now be directed to CDHT.

How can I get on the housing waiting list?

See above.

How do I complain about my neighbour?

Wherever possible you should try to resolve the problem yourself. Often the best way to resolve a neighbour problem is by the neighbours involved just talking to each other and trying to see each other's point of view. Simply advising someone that their behaviour is upsetting the peace and lifestyle of their neighbours can be enough.

If you are a tenant of Chester and District Housing Trust, you should contact them to tell them of your problems or concerns.  If you are dealing with a noisy neighbour, our Environmental Health Team may be able to help.  The Citizens Advice Bureau, a local tenants association or the police may also be able to give advice depending on the problem.

I'm homeless/facing homelessness - what can I do?

The local authority has a legal responsibility to all persons who are either homeless or threatened with homelessness within 28 days. The extent of the responsibility varies depending upon the circumstances of the homeless applicant and ranges from providing advice and assistance to enable the applicant to secure their own accommodation through to providing temporary accommodation until more secure accommodation can be found.  To find out more about how the council can help, see the homeless section of the website.

Who do I speak to about my Housing Benefit?

Our Housing Benefit Section will be happy to help you with any queries you may have about housing benefit including helping you with any application.  This website contains pamphlets and forms you can download, as well as who you should contact if you have any problems or are aware of benefit fraud.

How do I get a copy of the Housing Strategy?

You can download a full copy of Chester's Housing Strategy in the Housing section of the site.
