Old Port Regeneration

Old Port to Groves Riverside Promenade

What's it all about?

Chester residents will soon be able to walk or cycle along one of the most impressive riverside routes in the county.

The City Council is working, in partnership, to create a promenade that will stretch from the Groves through the Old Port to the edge of the city, creating a practical journey route and helping people enjoy greater access to and enjoyment from the River Dee.

Aim

Practically speaking, the project is aimed at promoting:

  • Improved flood defence
  • Cycling and walking
  • A new tourism/visitor attraction
  • Access to ecology and green space
  • Improved and public access along the river
  • Regeneration, particularly in the Old Port
  • Rediscovery of hidden heritage
  • A new recreation facility

The project will be delivered in a number of stages by the City Council and private developers.   Significant progress has been made in the Old Port with key sections of the route already open and others in progress.   The riverside promenade has also been completed in the Little Roodee car park.   At the present time, construction work is currently underway to extend the promenade around the racecourse with the first phase of this section expected to be completed by Spring 2006.
