Landfill Sites

Photograph of a dumper working a landfill siteFrom the Stone Age, filling holes with our rubbish has been the only way we have ever dealt with our growing waste mountains. Interesting to think that we, in this modern century, still do things undertaken by our Stone Age ancestors.

In Chester, all rubbish that is not recycled is sent to the Gowy Landfill Site:

The UK produces more than 434 million tonnes of waste every year. This rate of rubbish generation would fill the Albert Hall in London in less than 2 hours. We need to limit the amount that we send to landfill but the waste mountain is growing every year. Here are some of the things that have contributed to waste growth:

  • Nappies: 30 years ago, no disposable nappies went to landfill; now it's estimated that more than 36 Million end up in landfill sites in Cheshire ALONE! For more information; visit http://www.realnappy.com/  (external link)
  • Plastic Carrier Bags: Every year, an estimated 17.5 Billion plastic bags are given away by supermarkets. This is equivalent to over 290 bags for every person in the UK. Re-usable 'Bags for life' can be bought from Chesire Libraries for only £2.00. For more information on Eco-Friendly alternatives, visit Tree2MyDoor (external link).

For tips on how to reduce your waste visit the Cheshire County Council  (external link) website.

Closed Landfill Sites

Closed landfill sites are landfill sites that have come to the end of their useful life and are full.

Regular monitoring is undertaken to make sure that these sites stay in a stable condition. Old landfill sites can be restored to form useful recreational land.
