Online ServiceSpecial and Bulk Collections

The Council offers one free special collection to all households in each financial year. The Council's special collection service, which allows people to get rid of unwanted large bulky items, allows each household in the district one free collection between April and March each year providing a fairer, more accessible and easier system for residents to use. A special collection will comprise of all items available for collection at one time.

Further special collections will remain available at the standard charge of £15 including V.A.T.

Chester City Council is responsible for collecting mixed domestic waste only. Unfortunately we do not offer a specific collection service for hazardous waste (such as car oil, car batteries etc). These items can be disposed of at dedicated waste recycling sites located across the region. For more information please visit the Cheshire County Council  (external link) website.

To arrange a special collection, please contact the City Council's Environment Services Call Centre on 01244 402477. Alternatively please fill out the Special and Bulk Collections Online Form Online Service.

Please note that you may only apply for a collection service if your Council Tax is paid to Chester City Council. If it is paid to another Local Authority please contact them to see what services they offer.

All chargeable special collections must be paid for in advance.  Appointment times are set to be introduced later this year, but until then efforts will be made to ensure collections are as convenient as possible.

Some items earmarked for special collection can be re-used (for example some unwanted furniture) and where this is the case, the council will encourage residents to contact the appropriate organisation to arrange collection and re-use.

There are many companies specialising in Furniture Recycling. One such company is Cheshire Furniture Re-use Forum, a collection of 14 recycling projects around Cheshire, one of those projects is based right here in Chester. To discover more about an environmentally friendly way to dispose of your furniture, please click the following link; Visit the Cheshire Furniture Re-Use Forum (external link).

This will help minimise the amount of waste taken to landfill sites, providing a boost for the environment.

There will be no free special collections of garden waste from households included in the garden waste collection service (brown wheeled bins). This type of waste must be collected through the garden waste service to help the council achieve the Government's recycling target of 30% by 2005/06.
