Economic Development Strategy
Towards a New Chester 2002-2008
Since the early 90s the Chester economy has grown dramatically with over £920m worth of business investment and the creation of 19,000 jobs making the District one of the success stories of the North West. Chester's competitiveness now plays a vital role in the health of the sub-regional economy.
Nevertheless, we cannot be complacent. We need to continue to sustain this economic vibrancy in the face of significant economic challenges. Globalisation of the economy, an ageing workforce, greater flexibility in working patterns and competition from other areas will intensify over the next few years. Moreover there will be ongoing technological changes which will continue to transform our lifestyles, hopes and the economy.
The Chester Economic Development Task Group, which is made up of key representatives from the local public and private sector, has started to draw up a strategy to ensure continued economic prosperity over the next five years. A document "Towards a New Economic Development Strategy for Chester 2003-2008" has been produced as a basis for seeking the views of all those who have a stake in the future of the area. It provides facts and figures on the state of the economy in 2003; examines Chester's main economic sectors; identifies factors which may affect future economic competitiveness; and highlights key areas where action is required if success is to be sustained.
