The council has a limited number of sandbags available for the defence of property.

Criteria for Issue of Sandbags

  • It is the responsibility of property owners to protect their own property from flooding, however the council will consider requests for floodbags on a case for case basis
  • No limit has been placed on the number of floodbags which can be issued to residents or businesses whose premises are under threat of imminent internal flooding. However equal consideration will be given to all requests and these will be prioritised in order of need
  • The Issue of all council floodbags to the public will be recorded
  • At present council floodbags will initially be issued free of charge to premises which meet the above criteria - thereafter residents and businesses will be expected to purchase any additional floodbags from commercial suppliers.
  • Floodbags may be transported/delivered free of charge by council to premises under threat of imminent, internal flooding:- only if resources permit
  • Callers may be requested to collect their own floodbags. Collection must be under the supervision of a council officer.
  • A resident who requests floodbags on the belief that their property only may be at risk of flooding will be advised that the council will not provide free floodbags.  Under these circumstances they will be advised to make their own arrangements with a commercial supplier.
  • Reusable floodbags of the type held by the council may be purchased from  Independent Flood Defence Products, enquiries@ifdp.co.uk (Tel 01379 644033)
  • The National Flood Forum is a non-profit organisation set up by people with direct experience of flooding.  Further information about flood prevention products and advice on recovery from flooding can be found at  www.floodforum.org.uk (external site)  (Tel 01299 403055)
  • The Environment Agency also provides a range of flood defence advice and products on their website www.environment-agency.gov.uk (external link)

Flood Bags

  • Flood bags are issued with a gel strip, the bag is filled with water and the gel strip inserted, the whole contents then change to a gel. Flood bag contents are bio-degradable.  After use flood bags should be emptied and rinsed out.  To re-use flood bags a new gel strip will be required.
  • Re-usable flood bags of the type held by the council may be purchased from IFDP (Independent Flood Defence Products), Tel 01379 644033, enquiries@ifdp.co.uk.  (www.ifdp.co.uk (External Site))
  • It is considered that four flood bags are adequate to defend a one metre wide doorway.
  • It may also be necessary to defend low level air bricks or vents.

Removal and Clean Up

  • Residents or businesses will be responsible for the removal and clean up of sand bags which have been issued free of charge by the council to premises under threat of imminent, internal flooding.
  • Consideration will be given to the removal and clean up of sand bags which have been issued free of charge to vulnerable people in premises under threat of imminent, internal flooding.
