Chester Amphitheatre from Gladiators to Gardens

Chester Amhphitheatre: from Gladiators to Gardens

‘Chester Amphitheatre from gladiators to gardens’ is a new full colour booklet launched in Chester this week. The story of Chester’s Roman Amphitheatre is told based on the interim results from the past two year’s excavations. The booklet has been written by Stewart Ainsworth and Tony Wilmott from English Heritage, it’s a joint publication between Chester City Council and English Heritage.

The booklet starts with a historical background looking at the role the amphitheatre played in the growth of Chester. The second half acts as a guidebook to the results of the landscape surveys and the history of the changing area around the amphitheatre. The booklet contains many photographs and images of objects from the excavations including the fragment of a Roman sword handle, Roman glass and pottery, Medieval comb and jug. Archive photographs and drawings track the amphitheatre site through the centuries.

‘Chester Amphitheatre from gladiators to gardens’ is a full colour, 45 page booklet on sale at the Chester Visitor Centre and the Grosvenor Museum for just £3.75 a copy.

Over the past two years, Chester City Council and English Heritage have worked together in partnership to partially excavate the remains of Chester’s Roman amphitheatre. The results of the project will be used to inform the future management, conservation and display of the amphitheatre.
