‘The Amphitheatre in Focus’: is a new photographic exhibition opening on Saturday 18 December at the Chester Visitor Centre. The exhibition is by Chester photographer David Heke who has been following the amphitheatre excavations throughout the summer.

The theme of the exhibition is: to show the activities and finds of the first season's work in a way which is not purely dry and documentary, but is instead a more personal interpretation of events. Images are therefore primarily aesthetic, for example showing a digger outlined against the sky, or drying gloves silhouetted against the Dee House chapel window. Although mainly showing straight black and white, or colour photographs, the exhibition also contains a few manipulated images which interpret specific elements of the site. Prints will be available to buy directly from David, details are available at the exhibition.
The Chester Amphitheatre Project is a three year program of research and investigation, involving excavation, examination of old records, geophysical and architectural survey. The first year has produced a diverse range of artefacts from early Roman pottery, brooches, buckles and musket balls to a worn-out-shovel blade left behind by the 1960’s excavations. The first season ended in September but work continues during the winter; cleaning, sorting, analysing and cataloguing the many finds.
