Chester's Amphitheatre hits the tv screens again at 7.30pm on Thursday 15th September as part of Granada TV's series, 'Lost Treasures'.
Episode 6: Strength & Honour
Charismatic antiquarian Mark Olly goes in search of Roman treasures in Deva, modern day Chester, the largest fortress in Britain and unearths the latest archaeological finds of a massive amphitheatre. Mark encounters Roman ghosts, the secrets of gladiatorial combat, the oldest battle cemetery in Britain, and reveals the legendary city of Britain’s most famous mythical hero king.
Chester is known internationally as a Roman camp. Any archaeologist worth his Nantwich Salt would spend a little time at the amphitheatre finding out what colleagues in the profession have been discovering. Over to the Grosvenor Museum where Mr. Olly challenges the long held belief that the smashed skulls are those of Welsh Britons slain during the Battle of Chester in 613. Here we find one of the largest battle cemeteries ever discovered on British soil.
