Chester City Council has re-affirmed its commitment to a major new research programme earmarked for one of Chester`s most important landmarks.
The council has teamed up with English Heritage to implement an exciting new project for Chester`s amphitheatre, and last night (Thursday, January 15) cabinet members agreed to refocus the work of the council`s Heritage Services and set aside funding to help deliver the project.
Over the next three years the council and English Heritage will carry out large-scale archaeological research on the site, including part of the previously un-excavated grounds of Dee House.
The project includes:
Councillor Ann Farrell, portfolio holder for culture and heritage, said: "I`m delighted that cabinet has confirmed our commitment to this project in terms of re-focusing the work of our Heritage Services and setting aside funding. "The council is determined to make the most of this opportunity, which promises to yield clear benefits for Chester`s heritage and economy."
Both the council and English Heritage are already working together to improve the existing excavated area - providing new steps, railings and new interpretation structures. This work will be completed by Easter this year.
David Miles, chief archaeologist for English Heritage, added: "We are delighted to be working in partnership with Chester City Council on the amphitheatre project. "We are committed to developing a major community project that will provide many opportunities for the local population to be actively involved in making the most of this exciting city centre attraction."
The Amphitheatre Steering Group, whose members also include the Chester Amphitheatre Trust, Chester Civic Trust, Chester Attractions Consortium and Chester Archaeological Trust, are backing the project. The partners will evaluate the research from the project and work with the local community to determine a long-term vision for the amphitheatre.
