The town of Piran, the administrative centre of the municipality, developed at the tip of the peninsula at the westernmost part of Slovenia. Piran has 17,500 inhabitants and covers an area of 44 km. Piran, which includes Portoroz is known as the most tourism developed municipality in Slovenia. Today we are trying to preserve everything that our ancestors left us and adapt it to the modern way of life. Above all, the tourists are attracted by the ancient town of Piran, declared to be a historical monument. In past centuries, its buildings, typically stone and Mediterranean, were encircled by city walls several times. In the present day these buildings have been carefully renovated. A lot of attention is given to the renovation of the infrastructure, the traffic regulation and the maintenance of the green areas. The municipality draws much of its impetus for development from its historical tradition. With its favourable Mediterranean climate, the municipality produces vegetables, wine, and olives-products.
