Chester City Council

Chester's Eastgate clockChester City Council is a local authority, in the North West of the UK, with responsibility and powers for regeneration, tourism, heritage management, marketing and economic development. It has a population of 120,000 and an area of 175 square miles that includes the city of Chester and a large attractive rural area. Chester has a high spatial impact and importance – it is a sub -regional hub and business centre, drawing 6 million business and tourist visitors per annum.

Chester is a 2000 year old city which is known to many as the black and white city, referring to the medieval period. The most distinctive medieval feature of the city is The Rows. These are double-level walkways with a continuous line of balconies and with shops at street and first-floor levels. Chester is the most complete walled city in the UK and has a 2000 year-old Roman Amphitheatre - the largest stone-built arena of its kind in Britain.
