Death and Bereavement

Even when you are mourning a loved one there are unfortunately, some administrative procedures you must follow.  This section is designed to help you find out more about what you need to do, or the options open to you.

Cemeteries and Crematoria - Details of cemeteries and crematoria  in the Chester district

Burial Records - Over 60,000 burial records (1850 - 1950) from Overleigh Old Cemetery are currently available online by clicking the following link Cheshire County Council Burial Records (external link).

Municipal Funerals - The aim of this service is to provide a low cost funeral service to the citizens. A person in receipt of benefits and  on a low income may be entitled to get financial assistance towards the cost of the funeral.

Help with Funeral Costs - If you are finding it difficult to pay for a funeral that you have to arrange, you may be able to get a social fund funeral payment from the Benefits Agency

Repatriation of a Deceased body - The foreign registration authority will issue a death certificate which needs to be taken to the registrar of the district in which the burial or cremation is taking place.

Exhuming a body - Exhumations are generally rare and tend to be traumatic for the family involved. They can take a long time to arrange and are usually expensive. For these reasons, it is always best to consult with all the relatives before proceeding

Independent Funeral - It is often assumed, quite wrongly, that funerals can be completed only with the use of a funeral director.

Registering a death -  A death must be registered before a burial or cremation can take place and the majority of deaths are registered by a relative of the deceased.

Dealing with bereavement - Even when you are mourning a loved one there are unfortunately, some administrative procedures you must follow.
