The Children's Act seeks to offer greater protection to children. The main principles are:

  • to make children's welfare a priority;
  • recognise that children are best brought up within their families where ever possible;
  • the local authority can provide services for children and families in need;
  • to promote partnership between children, parents and local authorities;
  • to improve the way courts deal with children and families with rights of appeal against court decision;
  • and to protect the rights of children.

If you are worried that a child might be suffering from abuse or need protecting contact your local Social Services Access Team (external link), or Emergency Out of Hours 01606 76611 or Childline on 0800 1111.

If you have suffered from abuse in childhood and need support and help but don't know where to go NAPAC can direct you to relevant counselling services in your area. (external link)
