Barrow Ward

Barrow is a rural ward in the east of Chester District and consists of the four main communities of Barrow, Dunham Hill, Hapsworth and Mouldsworth. The main industry in the ward is agriculture, which has become more diverse over recent years to include other farm-based businesses, such as riding and data storage. There are also a number of small businesses, although there are no major employers in the area.

The housing in the area is mainly private, family homes, but there are small clusters of social housing in Barrow, Dunham Hill and Hapsford. Dunham Hill has a mobile home park and a privately owned, permanent gypsy site. Gracefield and Greenfields provide housing for elderly people. Just outside Barrow village is Barrowmore Settlement, which houses a number of small industrial units.

Barrow ward has two primary schools in Barrow village and Dunham Hill. However, for secondary education, pupils have to travel either to Christleton or Helsby. There are three pre-school facilities within the ward, at Barrow, Dunham Hill and Mouldsworth. An occasional GP surgery is held on Friday afternoons in Barrow Village Hall, otherwise
people have to travel to surgeries in neighbouring wards. Barrow has a village shop which also houses the only full-time post office, however, its future is uncertain. There is a part-time post office in Dunham Hill.

Public transport is restricted within the area. There are limited buses, and 19 trains per day run through Mouldsworth in each direction on the Manchester to Chester line.

There are three village halls in the area, a large hall in Barrow and a small hall in Dunham Hill. Mouldsworth shares a hall with Ashton Hayes village in Kelsall ward. All of the communities have a range of clubs, activities and events. There are also seven public houses and four churches. The ward has two play areas, in Barrow and Dunham Hill.  Barrow also has a Cricket Club, with a privately owned cricket pitch.
