Boughton Ward

Boughton is an urban area close to the city centre. It became important as three Roman roads intersected there. In the early 12th century Earl Randle Blunderville founded a leper hospital in Boughton. Historical landmarks include the Water Tower, Leadshot Tower and the Steam Mill.

The ward has a variety of housing including tower blocks, rows of terraced and semi-detached housing, detached riverside mansions in Sandy Lane and new apartments in Canalside on Egerton Street.

Although Boughton is an urban ward, it has within it the River Dee and the water frontage and recreation area in Sandy Lane, where families over the years have enjoyed splashing around in the outdoor paddling pool, recently replaced by Chester's first aqua park.

Boughton has other green spaces as well.  In the Canalside area there is a small park by the canal, named after the old Leadworks that used to be situated in the area. Bowling green facilities are located in Stocks Lane. The other significant open space is Cherry Grove recreation area, which has a new play area designed by local children.

The ward has several main employers including HBOS, the Civil Service and Muir Housing Association. There are other employment opportunities provided by the many shops and pubs in the area. There are also several hotels on City Road.

There are retail outlets in the Brook Street area, where there are a variety of specialist shops and an active traders association.  There are also the Christleton Road and Boughton retail centres.

The ward has a number of active residents' associations which organise activities for all ages.

There are two schools within the ward Boughton St Paul's Infant and Nursery school and Cherry Grove Primary school. There is also a playgroup at Tarvin Methodist Hall.

Boughton is well served by good roads, rail and bus links. There are local healthcare facilities at Boughton Medical Centre, Hoole Lane and Boughton Heath Medical Centre.
