City and St Anne's Ward

This ward was a major Roman settlement site with Roman remains found at various sites.  City and St Anne's ward has the Shropshire Union Canal and the River Dee running through it. Other open spaces include Grosvenor Park, Northgate Village Park and St Anne's Field.

The ward is well served by various community and voluntary organisations including Chester Voluntary Action (CVA), DIAL House, Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), Chester Asian Council and the Talking Newspaper. There is a strong spiritual presence in the ward with at least 13 places of worship including Chester Cathedral. Sport and leisure facilities are available at the Northgate Arena and Odeon Cinema. Several night clubs provide evening entertainment.

For older and more vulnerable people there are various places where they can find help and support including Canal Street Day Centre, the soup kitchen at Chester Mission, Queen Street Christian Centre, the Tomlins Day Centre for homeless and vulnerable people, and overnight hostels.

This ward is the prime provider for tourism in Chester and includes the historic Walls, Roman remains, the Amphitheatre, the Rows and city centre area. There are plenty of major employers and jobs in tourism, retail, hospitality, as well as the city council and county council.

There are shops at the Forum, Grosvenor Mall, the market, and in the city centre. The city centre shopping area attracts visitors from all over the world. Within the ward are St Mary's Nursery School, Chester Library and various University of Chester departments.

There is a wide range of accommodation specifically for older people, some social (for rent), some for lease and for sale. Northgate Village is modern housing built in the 1990s. In Newtown there is a mix of Victorian and Edwardian terraces, 1950s high rise tower blocks and maisonettes. In the city centre and riverside areas there are Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian and modern properties.

There are many different ways of getting around the ward including Dial a Ride, Park & Ride, bus, car, cycles, coaches, as well as walking.
