College Ward

College ward is situated to the west of the city centre and is geographically compact, apart from two 'spurs', the Westbourne Road area and the Sealand Road area. The rest of the ward has a mix of all types of housing, from large Victorian properties, some divided into bed sits and student accommodation to smaller terraces and modern homes. A number of housing providers operate in the area, offering a range of accommodation for people with different needs. There are also, particularly in the Old Port area, intense developments of large apartment blocks built on brown field sites.

As the name suggests, the main university campus is situated in the ward. From October to June, the population numbers are swelled significantly by a high student presence. The university is a major employer in the ward, although retail outlets, and the hotel industry also offer significant employment opportunities. There are two excellent local schools, Victoria Infants and St Thomas of Canterbury Junior school.

The canal basin and historic port area are situated within the ward, which also extends as far as the River Dee. The opportunities for walking in this area have recently received a boost as the riverside path stretching from the Groves to the Old Port is almost completed.

A substantial proportion of the city walls are contained within College ward, enabling easy access to park facilities such as the Water Tower Gardens and the Cop. Residents also benefit from a range of leisure facilities, including the riverside, Sealand Road allotments, the Water Tower Garden bowling greens and tennis courts. Major leisure facilities such as the Greyhound Retail Park, the Northgate Arena and the Gateway Theatre are all in, or close to the ward. A number of social clubs and pubs serve the area.

There are a number of active community and voluntary organisations in the area, such as the Cambrian Community Association, the Garden Lane Residents and Traders' Association and the Canal Basin Forum. Other groups in the ward provide specialist services, such as toddler groups, the Chester Deaf Centre and the Grosvenor Housing Young People's Foyer.
