Dodleston Ward
Dodleston is a rural ward in the east of the district, sharing borders with North Wales to the west and south and divided by the River Dee. The A55 and A483 run through the ward. The ward is made up of the parishes of Aldford, Buerton, Churton Heath, Claverton, Dodleston, Eaton, Eccleston, Marleston-cum-Lache, Poulton, Pulford, Lea Newbold and Lower Kinnerton. Main settlements include Aldford, Dodleston, Lower Kinnerton, Eccleston, Poulton, and Pulford. The Grosvenor Estate is the ward's largest landowner. The original entrance to Eaton Park estate, the Duke's Drive, is now a popular public space. Dodleston ward has a long history of human settlement and excavations reveal Poulton as an important Bronze Age site.
There are small - scale housing developments in a number of communities, and Dodleston has an estate of 300 homes. Grosvenor Estate is the largest private landlord. Agriculture is still the ward's main economic activity. However, Chester Business Park employs over 10,000 people mainly in financial services. British Aerospace, just over the border in North Wales, is also a major employer. There are pockets of small business activity including a business park in Cuckoo's Nest. Retail activity includes the Grosvenor Garden Centre. There is no dentist or doctor's surgery in the ward.
Dodleston has a post office/general store and a primary school, as well as a church and pub. The village hall is well used by the community, including the WI, a nursery and dramatic society. A local foundation manages the children's and youth play facility. Eccleston village has a primary school and a church. The lively village hall has a pre-school group, and there are two other full-time nurseries in the parish.
Pulford has a village hall, a church, a hotel, a beauty salon, and a garage. There is a playing field to the east of Wrexham Road. Aldford has a post office and village shop, a church, a small but very active village hall, and a pub. Abbey Gate independent school is also in the village. In the centre of Aldford there is a well-used play area and bowling green. The neighbouring hamlet of Bruera has a church.
Children of secondary school age from the area attend schools in Boughton, Handbridge, Christleton and Malpas.
