Elton Ward

Elton ward is made up of the parishes of Elton,Thornton-le-Moors, Little Stanney, Stoak,Wervin and Croughton. These are served by three parish councils. The main settlements are Elton, Thornton-le-Moors, Stoak, Wervin and Little Stanney. Elton, although in a rural setting, is characterised by its proximity to heavy industry, with an oil refinery on two sides, the A5117 road on the southern border and the M56 to the east. The ward maintains a strong farming connection and it is common to find several generations of the same family within the area. While local industry and agriculture provide some jobs, many residents look to Chester, Ellesmere Port, Liverpool and Manchester for work.

Elton, the largest village in the ward, has a shopping precinct with a post office. The community centre is used daily by groups including a playgroup, a weekly library session, and parish council meetings. Next door, there is a purpose-built health centre and a primary school. Children must travel outside Elton for secondary education. There are two pubs. The church hall hosts religious services and Ince Play Group, as well as other community activities. Elton has an hourly bus, which also serves Thornton-le-Moors, and a meagre train service.

The centre of Elton is a conservation area.  Elton also has a mobile home park, senior citizen flats, and estates which were built over the last four decades. Elton has a playing field next to the school with a football pitch and play area. There are two play areas on the new estate. Elton has a significant Gypsy and Traveller population, some of whom have bought houses or land in the village.

Opposite Stanlow Oil Refinery, with a small population, is Thornton-le-Moors. The village church is closed, but the parish rooms remain open. The play area and playing field are well appointed. The village has a farm shop and a small hardware store. There is a large, privately owned nursing home. Little Stanney, a small hamlet, has a village hall, which also serves Stoak, Wervin and Croughton. The village is within walking distance of Cheshire Oaks shopping outlet. There are three pubs and a popular caravan site. Stoak is a tight knit community. The village has a popular pub and an ancient church. The canal has a small marina. The playing field and play area are well-equipped. Wervin has a mixture of houses and bungalows and has a small mobile home park.
