Farndon Ward

Farndon ward lies in the rural south-west of Chester district and is made up of the parishes of Churton-by-Aldford, Churton-by-Farndon, Crewe-by-Farndon, Edgerley, Farndon, and King's Marsh. The ward is divided by the B5130 and the A534. Main villages in the ward are Farndon and Churton; smaller settlements include the hamlet of Crewe-by-Farndon.

The River Dee forms the western edge of the ward, which is also the boundary between England and Wales. Historically, the FarndonHolt Bridge was the first river crossing south of Chester, thus the village has a colourful history, appearing in the Domesday Book and playing a key role in the civil war.  There are many historic buildings within the ward. Much of the area around Farndon was owned by the Barnston family, while Churton is part of the Eaton Estate. The Farndon riverside is a site of special scientific interest.

Around 85% of housing is privately owned; major social landlords include Chester and District Housing Trust and the Barnston Trust.  Lack of affordable housing is an issue in the ward, although recent development proposals seek to address this matter. Agriculture and related services are the main employers.  Other local businesses include a boarding kennels.

Farndon and Churton both have active parish councils and village halls. Farndon Sports and Social Club also has a full social programme.  Clubs and societies include a thriving Scout troop, an eight-ball pool league and Farndon Brass Band.  Farndon has a large football field, a skate park, a bowling green, tennis courts and a childrens play area. Churton has one pub, with three in Farndon, one of which also provides hotel facilities.

Farndon has a primary school and a nursery which serve the surrounding villages.  The village also has a doctor's surgery and a good range of shops, including a pharmacy and a post office. Places of worship in the ward include an historic Anglican church and two chapels. The day time Chester to Wrexham bus service runs through Farndon and Churton hourly. Otherwise, public transport within the ward is scarce.
