Handbridge & St Mary's Ward
Handbridge & St Mary's ward is situated south of the River Dee. Its origins are ancient and it now comprises of the village of Handbridge and Queen's Park, Greenbank and Belgrave Park. The ward is reached by three bridges Old Dee Bridge (medieval), Grosvenor Bridge and the suspension bridge. Handbridge is approximately one mile from The Cross in Chester city centre.
Handbridge has a fine street of specialist retailers, much appreciated by residents and visitors alike. There is also a good selection of pubs.
There is a variety of housing in the ward including social housing and Victorian terraces. Part of Handbridge is in the conservation area and has many listed properties. There is a frequent bus service and road links to the ring road and beyond.
There are plenty of open spaces in Handbridge including the river front at "Nowhere" along to Salmon Leap and beyond to the Meadows. In Edgar's Field there is a play area and a small Roman shrine to the goddess Minerva. Duke's Drive is also a pleasant area for walking on the Duke of Westminster's Estate. Handbridge has areas of open space around the housing known as the Plantations and many allotments.
There are two high schools in the ward, Queens Park High School and Chester Catholic High School, one primary school Overleigh St Marys and West Cheshire College. Activities for young people are organised at Chester Youth Club, St Mary's Church youth club and West Cheshire College, as well as after-school activities at the schools.
There are active resident groups in the ward including Queen's Park Residents Association, Handbridge Community Association, Belgrave Park Residents Association and a number of single street residents groups. Other groups include Handbridge Historical Society, Friends of the Meadows, Friends of Edgar's Field, Friends of Salmon Leap and the WI also meet in the ward and luncheon clubs are organised locally.
There are several places of worship in Handbridge St Mary's including the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Barbara the Great Martyr, Handbridge St Andrews United Reformed Church and the Church of England parish church St Mary's-without-the-Walls.
