Hoole Groves Ward
Hoole Groves is an urban ward containing both private and social housing with some flats, supported housing, maisonettes and hotels. The ward is bounded to the north by the Millennium Way (disused railway track), to the east by the A41, to the south by the Chester/Crewe railway line and to the west by Canadian Avenue and Newton Lane.
The ward has several open spaces, the largest being Coronation Field. This playing field has football and cricket pitches and is popular with dog walkers. There is an active allotment colony adjacent to the field and behind the allotments is a long narrow strip of woodland locally named 'the Spinney', containing protected mature trees. Between the allotments and the playing field there is a bowling green. In addition, there is a small play area at Pipers Court, and a private tennis club on Fairfield Road.
To the north edge of the ward is Newton Hollows, a rare surviving archaeological site. Important historically, it lies on the route of a Roman road from Chester to Warrington. Reference to its existence dates back to the mid-12th century.
Hoole Groves has two shops, a post office incorporating a convenience store and a fast food take-away. There is one church and a pub. There is a doctor's surgery in Newton Lane, as well as two chiropractors and a reflexologist within the ward.
The ward has good transport links into the city centre including buses through the Groves and down Hoole Lane.
There are no schools within the ward but primary schooling is available just outside in Hoole All Saints ward. There is private day nursery care in Alder Grove and a Montessori nursery school based at Hoole United Reformed Church. The church hosts a variety of groups for all ages, including a luncheon club, keep fit, Rainbows, parent and babies/toddlers group, Beavers, Cub Scouts, Scouts and Brownies.
The ward has no major employers but there are employment opportunities in the hotels and guest houses on Hoole Road.
