Kelsall Ward

Within the ward there are two distinct residential areas, Kelsall and Ashton Hayes (previously known as Ashton). The two settlements have a very different history.  Ashton Hayes, as its name now implies is an estate village, linked to the fine estate of Ashton Hayes. Kelsall has evolved from dwellings and smallholdings on either side of a busy trunk road. Since the completion of the scenic bypass, it has become an attractive village.

Both villages are vibrant communities with many social and community facilities. Ashton Hayes has a village hall, a Women's Institute, parish rooms and a scout hut. Kelsall also has parish rooms, a community centre, and a village institute. Kelsall has two places of worship St Philip's Church and a Methodist church. There is also a mobile church, which meets in the community centre. Ashton Hayes has an Anglican church (St John the Evangelist) and a Methodist chapel.

Both communities have post offices. In Ashton Hayes this combines with a small shop. In Kelsall with a larger Co-op, and there is also a butchers and a pharmacy. There are three doctors surgeries, two in Kelsall and one in Ashton Hayes. The nearest dental practices are in Tarporley, where there is also a cottage hospital.

Both communities have a thriving range of recreational activities. Sports facilities include a cricket club, tennis and football. Ashton Hayes retains its scout hut and there is a long-established Ashton Hayes Theatre Club.  Whilst both villages have traditional play areas with swings and goal posts, there is great support for improving recreational facilities.  For smaller children there is a play scheme based at the community school in Kelsall and a well attended private nursery in Ashton.

Employment in Cheshire's chemical industry continues to attract new residents into the ward. Others are commuters employed in professional and managerial occupations within the service industries. Technology is allowing more people to work from home and there is still a strong link to forestry, agriculture and local building.
