Lache Park Ward

Lache Park ward lies on the Welsh border to the south of the River Dee. At its heart is Lache estate, an area of largely social housing, dating from the first half of the 20th century. Most of the housing is for families, although there is some sheltered accommodation for older people. The ward also includes areas of privately owned terraced and more modern housing. To the west of the railway line which divides the ward, there are family homes dating from the 1980s, joining up with Saltney in Flintshire.

In spite of its proximity to some of the most affluent areas in Chester, Lache Park ward contains pockets of multiple deprivation ranking in the 1% most disadvantaged in England. To address this imbalance, Lache estate was recently awarded £1.6 million Neighbourhood Renewal money to introduce Neighbourhood Management. This initiative will build on the achievements of Lache Park Ltd. and Lache Family Centre. The latter, under National Childrens Homes, has supported vulnerable local families for over 20 years.

Lache estate is a close knit community, which centres on Sycamore field, a large green area with sports and play equipment. To the southwest is a disused landfill site known locally as LAPA field which is home to Lache Adventure Playground.

Lache Park ward has a library and a few shops on Cliveden Road, but no supermarket. There is an office of Chester and District Housing Trust, but Lache's post office closed at the end of 2004 and is much missed. A group of buildings on Hawthorn Road includes St Clare's Church, an active community centre, a medical centre, cybercentre, a young people's centre, two primary schools and a pre-school playgroup run on a voluntary basis. A Surestart Children's and Young People's Centre, due to open in late summer 2006, will co-ordinate all these services.

Hough Green/Chester Street runs across the northern boundary of the ward, hosting a range of businesses including a mini-market, a post office and a chemist. St Mark's Church is nearby. To the west, Redhill House accommodates some 40 small and medium enterprises. The nearest secondary schools are in Handbridge.
