Malpas Ward
Malpas ward lies approximately 16 miles south of Chester. It is the most rural and the largest in area of the Chester City Council wards. The ward is bounded on the east by the A49, the Shropshire and Welsh borders to the south and west, and Tilston ward to the north. By far the largest village (a town by virtue of its now disappeared market) is Malpas itself. The other parishes of Edge, Hampton, Larkton, Agden, Bradley, Tushingham-cum-Grindley, Wigland, Wychough, Newton-by-Malpas, Macefen, Bickley, Chidlow, Chorlton, Cuddington, Oldcastle, Overton, Stockton, No-Mans-Heath and Threapwood are, with the exception of the last two, small hamlets. The A41 Chester to Whitchurch bus, the only public transport in the ward, serves a number of these villages.
Malpas ward was traditionally dairy country, but farmers have been leaving the business at a frightening rate over the last few years, changing our community and countryside permanently. The growth of alternative occupations has only partially compensated for agricultural decline. However, Malpas remains a beautiful and picturesque part of Cheshire, enjoying modern facilities, and a more leisurely way of life. A spirit of social involvement and commitment to local welfare and activities makes Malpas and surrounding areas the strong community it is today.
Malpas sits on the Roman road from present day Wroxeter in Shropshire to Chester, acting as a natural centre for the area. Thanks to its distance from Chester, Malpas supports an extraordinarily wide range of shops and services, including a GP surgery and a dentist. Several local businesses have thrived over the years and grown into significant national enterprises. Other smaller operations provide the support and service which adds so much to the community. Malpas and Tushingham each have primary schools, while Bishop Heber High School, also in Malpas, serves the ward and beyond.
The name Malpas, meaning 'bad pass', hints at the violence suffered by this isolated village in the early days of border raiding. These days, exploring the small back roads, lanes, footpaths and bridle paths in this delightful part of Cheshire is a rewarding experience.
