Mickle Trafford Ward
Mickle Trafford ward lies to the east of Chester city and is made up of the villages of Mickle Trafford, Bridge Trafford, Wimbolds Trafford, Picton, Picton Gorse, Hoole Village and Hoole Bank. Most of the ward lies outside the A55 by-pass, although the section around Hoole Hall Hotel lies between the A55 and the A41. Most of the ward remains rural, and the area closest to Chester lies in greenbelt land.
Historically, Mickle Trafford was a key river crossing point for visitors to Chester. The village is noted for its annual well-dressing in honour of St Plegmund. Nearby, the Gibbet Field is named after two 18th century highway men who were hung there. There are a number of historic buildings within the ward, including Trafford Hall, Trafford Mill and the ancient church at Mickle Trafford.
Agriculture is an important economic activity in the ward. There are also a number of small and medium - sized businesses, including a builder's merchant, plant nurseries and artisan workshops. The Gowy Landfill site at Bridge Trafford provides jobs locally. There is little retail activity in the ward, although there are a number of pubs. Mickle Trafford has a post office and general store. Most residents commute to jobs in Chester, Deeside, Liverpool and Manchester.
Most of the housing in the ward is privately owned, although there is some social housing in Mickle Trafford. Six affordable homes were recently built in Mickle Trafford to meet an identified need. Mickle Trafford has a primary school, while secondary age children travel to Christleton and Upton high schools, depending on where they live. There are a number of private and community run preschool facilities within the ward. The internationally acclaimed Hammond School of Dance is at Hoole Bank.
Buses running from Chester to Warrington and Helsby stop in Mickle Trafford and Wimbolds Trafford. However, lack of public transport is an issue, particularly for elderly residents. Other villages do not have public transport and Mickle Trafford Parish Council subsidise a taxi service for residents. The mobile library visits Mickle Trafford, but there are no doctors surgeries or dental surgeries within the ward. The scout hut and village hall at Mickle Trafford host many social and community activities.
