Mollington Ward
Mollington ward is made up of the eight parishes of Ledsham, Capenhurst, Mollington, Lea-by-Backford, Chorlton-by-Backford, Moston, Caughall and Backford. The main villages within the ward are Mollington, Backford, Chorlton, Capenhurst and Ledsham. Smaller settlements include Caughall, Moston and Lea.
There are a number of large historic properties within the ward, most of which are used for residential or business purposes. These include Backford Hall, now county council offices, Crabwall Manor and Mollington Banastre, now a country club and a hotel respectively. Chorlton Hall remains a private residence.
Most of the housing in the ward is privatelyowned, although a few homes are owned by Chester and District Housing Trust. The army owns a substantial amount of accommodation at the Dale Army Camp, which lies within the ward. There are residential care homes in Mollington and Capenhurst villages.
The Urenco uranium enrichment site at Capenhurst is a major employer and the main industrial development within the ward. There are a number of major companies within the same estate. Farm diversification projects, local nurseries and market gardens, garages, and a small - scale cheese manufacturer also provide some employment. There is no traditional village retailing within the ward, and residents must travel to access shops and services, including healthcare. Mollington and Capenhurst have village schools which provide primary education for local children.
Mollington and Capenhurst village halls are lively hubs of social activities within the ward, used for a wide range of events including travelling theatre productions and pub nights. Local clubs and societies include the local history group, branches of the Women's Institute, Mother's Union and the Church Fellowship. Sports facilities in the ward include the recently-built 18-hole golf course at Mollington, football pitches belonging to Mollington School, Capenhurst factory club, and the Dale Army Camp.
The railway line and its station at Capenhurst provides a public transport link into Chester and Merseyside. There are bus services running down the A41 and A540 connecting Chester and the Wirral.
