Newton Brook Ward
Newton Brook ward is a mix of post-war suburban housing, Edwardian period terraced railway cottages and other residential developments. Flookersbrook Hall and Kilmorey Estate were earlier settlements dating from late medieval times. There are a number of sheltered accommodation developments in the ward managed by social landlords.
Kilmorey Park and Flookersbrook lie on the course of the Roman
road leading from Chester to Warrington. The plantations along
Hoole Road and fronting Flookersbrook are maintained by an
independent trust. The Hoole District War Memorial is also
located
here.
The ward is well served by public transport, with buses on Hoole Road, Brook Lane and Dicksons Drive/Neston Drive. There is no GP surgery in the ward itself, so residents must use services in neighbouring Upton or the city centre. Dental surgeries are located in Flookersbrook and Hoole Lane/Newton Lane.
New play facilities have been developed on Dicksons Drive Field, and there is a junior playground at Chesterton Court. The cycleway now re-styled the Greenway - is valued by residents, dog walkers and cyclists as a safe access route. The Friends of the Cycleway are actively working to improve this area.
As a largely residential area, there are no major employers in the ward. However, Newton Brook has three retail clusters. Ermine Road has a number of shops including a fast food take-away. Brook Lane has a hairdresser and a convenience store and there is a minisupermarket at Dicksons Drive parade, together with a dry cleaners and driving test centre. There are two pubs in the ward.
Private childcare is provided by individuals in the ward, while the nearest nursery is at Upton Westlea School, a ten minute walk outside the ward. There are two schools in the ward, Newton Primary School in Kingsway West and the Firs School, an independent school in Well Lane. There is a small Plymouth Brethren community, as well as a Union Church on Dicksons Drive.
