Saughall Ward
Saughall ward comprises of the parishes of Saughall and Shotwick Park, Puddington, Shotwick and Woodbank. There are a number of buildings of historic note within the ward, including a Jacobean manor house, an ancient church at Shotwick, the privately-owned Shotwick Hall, and the original priest house at Puddington.
Although only a very small percentage of the population is involved with agriculture, the ward is overwhelmingly rural in character. Since the 1950s, Saughall ward has gradually changed from farming to commuter country, with residents commuting into Chester, Deeside, Liverpool, Merseyside and beyond.
Saughall village, by far the largest settlement in the ward, has a mix of privately owned and social housing, including sheltered accommodation for vulnerable residents. In addition to two primary schools, the village has a good range of local shops and businesses including a post office, pharmacy, a hairdressers, three pubs, a general store, plant nurseries, garages, a fishery and an architectural reclamation workshop.
The Vernon Institute in Saughall provides a lively hub for community activity, as do the two churches. Local clubs, societies and classes include: two day centres for elderly residents, a gardening club, well-attended Rainbows, Brownies and Guides, youth groups, football, cricket, snooker and table tennis clubs, the Women's Institute and an art group. There are a number of adult education and exercise classes based at the Vernon Institute, along with the local library. The local medical centre is based in the centre of the village and is very well used. The parish council owns and manages play and leisure facilities, including a five acre site which is in the process of being developed as recreation facilities for local residents. The Vernon Institute owns a sports area just over the border in Wales.
The other settlements in the ward do not have their own local facilities. Residents come into Saughall village, or use facilities over the district border in Neston. While access to Chester by public transport from Saughall is good, the other villages are sparsely served, and most people must rely on private cars to get around.
