Tarvin Ward
Tarvin ward is made up of the diverse settlements of Tarvin, Oscroft, Willington, Duddon, Clotton, Hargrave, Huxley, Hockenhull, Burton and Cotton Edmunds. Communities within the ward range from Tarvin itself, a large village with a wide range of shops and amenities, to smaller villages with community facilities but little or no retail outlets, and hamlets with no amenities. Depending on location, residents of some of the smaller villages tend to access retail facilities outside the ward.
The area is primarily rural and the majority of land is used for agriculture. Agriculture and retail provide some employment within the ward, but the majority of residents commute to jobs elsewhere. Tarvin village sustains a flourishing high street with all the necessary outlets, including six establishments providing hot food.
Housing in Tarvin and Duddon is mainly privately owned, with a proportion of Housing Trust properties. The other settlements all have an excellent mix of privately owned housing. Tarvin village centre was designated a conservation area in 1973 and has many fine buildings, including Georgian houses and timbered cottages.
The parish of Tarvin has churches in both Tarvin and Duddon. Hargrave has its own church. There are chapels in Tarvin and Huxley. Tarvin, Duddon and Huxley have their own primary schools with pre-school facilities. Community halls are the centre of activities in Tarvin, Duddon/Clotton, Huxley and Hargrave, and provide activities for all age groups. Tarvin, Duddon, Huxley and Hargrave enjoy play areas and outside recreational areas.
Tarvin itself is reasonably well served by public transport in all directions out of the village. Duddon and Clotton are on a main bus service route. The remaining settlements have sparse services or no public transport at all. The road infrastructure in Tarvin was aided by a new bypass on the A51, but the same road through the villages of Duddon and Clotton exerts major noise and disruption due to the fact that it is a signposted route to the motorway system. The A54 running through the original Tarvin by-pass, has needed extensive safety measures due to the volume of traffic. Speeding traffic on all other rural roads throughout the ward is a cause for great concern.
