Tilston Ward
Tilston lies in the rural south of Chester District, bordering the River Dee in the west and the Bickerton Hills in the east. The ward consists of the parishes of Broxton, Coddington, Shocklach and Tilston. It consists of the villages of Aldersey, Barton, Brown Knowl, Broxton, Caldecott, Carden, Castletown, Church Shocklach, Coddington, Duckington, Grafton, Harthill, Horton, Shocklach Oviatt, Stretton and Tilston. The A41 Whitchurch Road and the A534 Wrexham-Crewe Road cross the ward. Whitchurch, in Shropshire, and Wrexham, in North Wales, are the nearest towns with retail and leisure facilities.
Tilston village, a Roman settlement, was mentioned in the Domesday Book as the most important township around Chester. Water mills were once common. One, Stretton Mill, is still in operation. The River Dee plain is a site of special scientific interest. The sandstone ridge, popular with walkers and cyclists, lies across the east of the ward.
Most of the housing in the ward is privately owned. Main clusters of social housing are in Tilston, Shocklach and Clutton, which also have bungalows for elderly people. The ward is traditionally agricultural but nowadays many residents commute to nearby towns. Carden Park Hotel is the largest local employer. There are numerous smaller businesses, many of which are home-based.
Tilston itself has a post office/general store, two pubs and an active village hall. Tilston, Clutton, Harthill and Shocklach have primary schools but secondary age children have to travel to Malpas to school. Family doctors and dental surgeries are also based in Malpas. Shocklach and Coddington have village halls. Brown Knowl has a post office/village shop, a church hall and access to Bickerton Village Hall. The ward is visited by the mobile library service. Tilston has a playing field; Shocklach and Clutton have access to their school playing fields. Tilston, Shocklach and Coddington have ancient churches, while Brown Knowl has a Methodist church. Many active voluntary groups and organisations support the life of the community.
Although much of the ward is served by an hourly bus service, it has been identified as one of England's top 10% most deprived areas in terms of access to services.
