Upton Westlea Ward

Upton Westlea ward lies to the north east of Chester city centre and is an area of contrasts.  North of the A41 the ward is farmland, but to the south the ward is a mixture of private and social housing, mostly family homes with some flats. The majority of the housing was built in the 1960s although some properties were built much earlier than that. Buildings of note include the former St Mary's School built in 1885, the village hall (opened by Lady Grosvenor in 1928) and the Wheatsheaf pub, which was a home in 1865 and a bakehouse before that. Upton War Memorial is a distinctive landmark which commemorates those who gave their lives in the two World Wars.

There is one primary and one secondary school in the ward. Nursery education is provided in the St Mary's School building on Heath Road. There are activities for young people including a playgroup, parent and toddler group, rising fives group, and Boys and Girls Brigade at Upton United Reformed Church.

There are no parks or play areas in the ward, but there is a recreation area managed by Upton Parish Council called 'Chemistry Pits'.  This was gifted to the children of Upton 'in perpetuity' by Sir John Frost of Upton Lawn to ensure that local children had space to play. There are sports facilities at the County Officers club on Newton Lane and there is a children's play area on the border of the ward at Wealstone Lane.

For older people there are activities organised at the British Legion, in the village hall and at the church. Groups of all ages meet at the County Officers club including Weight Watchers, Slimming World and Chester Singles Club. Upton Westlea is home to other interesting groups, including Upton-by- Chester Local History Group, Chester and District Patchwork and Quilters and Upton Horticultural Society, all meeting at the village hall.

There are two local shopping areas, one on Long Lane and the other at Weston Grove.  Both sites include fast food take-aways, offlicences and convenience stores. Healthcare facilities include a clinic at Weston Grove, a dentist in Long Lane and a practice for alternative medicine in Heath Road. There is a doctor's surgery just over the border in Wealstone Lane. There are no major employers in the ward. However, there are good transport links by road and public transport to the rest of Chester.
