Vicars Cross Ward

Vicars Cross ward is approximately three miles from the centre of Chester and forms part of Great Boughton parish. It is known to the parish council as the North ward. Great Boughton has been a civil parish since 1894, when much of its area was market gardens.

There is a variety of housing in Vicars Cross.  The majority of the ward was built in the 1960s. However, there is Victorian housing in Filkins Lane and on Whitchurch Road.  The ward includes the hamlet of Pipers Ash and has a mix of family housing, social housing and housing for older people. There are proposals for a new development at Boughton Hall.

Within the ward there are two pubs and small shopping and retail pockets at Green Lane, Queen's Road and Vicars Cross Road.  There is one dentist and one pharmacy to service the ward. The nearest doctor is just outside the ward on Heath Lane in Great Boughton. The A41 runs through the ward and leads onto the A55. The M53 motorway is only five minutes away.

Vicars Cross has public open space at Thackeray Drive and Queen's Road Community Park. These are both parish council owned and include children's play areas. There are also city and county council owned open spaces at Cawdor Drive, Watling Court, Dulverton Avenue and Melrose Park (Melrose Park has a play area).

Vicars Cross United Reformed Church in Oldfield Drive provides a community space for various social activities and groups including the Townswomen's Guild, a women's friendship group, a luncheon club, a photographic society, and a toddler group.  Oldfield Primary School hosts adult learning sessions, after-school activities for pupils and a playgroup. Next to the school is Great Boughton library.

At the Scout Headquarters there are football pitches as well as Beavers, Brownies, Cubs, Scouts and Guides groups. The field and pitches are maintained by the parish council.  Square One is the local youth centre, run by Cheshire County Council. It provides youth activities and outreach workers. Other groups use the premises including Dynamos Football Club, an after-school club, mother and toddler group and the tea dance group. Chester Rugby Club is in the ward and there is a cricket club at Boughton Hall.
