Waverton Ward

Waverton is a rural ward to the east of Chester and is made up of Waverton and Rowton villages, and the hamlet of Cotton Abbotts. The ward is served by the two parish councils of Waverton and Rowton. Together the villages form a vibrant community which has, in recent years, become very popular with young families. The Waverton Carnival held each July combines the village fun run and firework display to provide the focal point of village events.

The A41 Chester to Whitchurch road lies to the west of the ward and is the route of an hourly bus service to Chester. The Chester-Crewe railway line and the Shropshire Union Canal both bisect the ward. Waverton is an ancient settlement dating back to 1090, while Rowton was the site of the Civil War battle of Rowton Heath. Most of the housing is privately owned, but there is a small development of social housing in Abbots Close and on Eggbridge Lane. There are moorings by the canal side.

Waverton ward's main industry is agriculture, however there is a small business park in Saighton Lane and some retailing in Waverton village, including a post office/general store.  The Rowton Hall Hotel has hotel and restaurant facilities, while Waverton has a pub.  The Crocky Trail adventure trail attracts visitors from across the region.

Waverton has an excellent primary school and a pre-school/nursery which is well supported by parents and the wider community. The ward has three Community Halls (Waverton Village Hall, Burley Memorial Hall and the Village Institute) which support a great variety of activities and clubs, including Rainbows & Brownies, bowling, badminton, an art group, handbell ringers, and a local history group. A GP surgery is held regularly in the Village Hall. There is a playing field adjacent to the Village Hall and Eaton Golf Club lies just outside Waverton. The mobile library visits regularly and there is a thriving and high profile book club, which runs the annual Waverton Good Read competition for first novels.

There are four churches, including St. Peter's Parish Church, St Werburgh's Catholic Parish Church, Rowton Methodist Church and Waverton Evangelical Fellowship. Matthew Henrys Unitarian Chapel also meets in the Village Hall.
