Chester in Partnership LogoWhat Works in Life Long Learning in Local Communities?

This module promoted thinking about ways in which local learning opportunities can contribute to improving individuals' quality of life and to strengthening communities.

  • At any stage in life successful learning improves self-confidence, raises self-esteem and increases motivation.
  • For many individuals these benefits may be far more important, or come along before, any outcomes directly related to employment or economic well-being.
  • These changes can arise from a whole range of very informal, short learning activities, well away from the traditional "evening class" model.
  • And, additionally, learning in family and community groups increases cohesion and creates resources in the shape of confident and capable people who can support others.

Aims:

  • find out how communities and organisations have worked together to create new opportunities in West Cheshire communities
  • recognise the variety of ways in which learning can benefit communities and individuals
  • think about possible means by which new community learning opportunities in Chester District might be developed

Through working in small groups with community learners and organisers, attendees had the chance to hear about and discuss a variety of local projects that illustrate how learning opportunities can be made available within communities.
