CultMark

![]()
CultMark is a European project which aims to promote chosen aspects of the cultural heritage of the cities involved. In the UK the Cultmark project is focused towards encouraging awareness and usage of the Shropshire Union Canal branch running through Chester and Ellesmere Port (shown as the highlighted section on the map below). There are five UK partners: Ellesmere Port and Neston Borough Council, Ellesmere Port Boat Museum, British Waterways, Cheshire County Council and the City Council itself.
The canal is an important key to Chester's industrial past. As the use of canals for trade purposes has declined over the years, it is now important to preserve and promote these waterways and highlight the use that they can still have today. These include recreational activities such as walking, cycling, visiting places along the canal route and enjoying the wildlife associated with the canal environment. This also leads to the regeneration of the areas surrounding the canal corridor.

The Cultmark partners organise various events around the canal, to fulfil the aim of the Cultmark Partnership. These include events such as boat rallies, model boat conventions, arts festivals and the canal festival itself. Cultmark also works to promote the Canal with local groups such as the Chester Canal Heritage Trust (external link).
More information about the various events and other information can be found on http://www.cultmark.org.uk/ (external link)
