Wrexham Road Park & Ride
History
Wrexham Road Park and Ride site is one of the four Park & Ride sites on the outskirts of the City Centre, encouraging people to use public transport and helping to reduce traffic in the City Centre. When the site was created, a proportion of the land remained unused, which contained a balancing pond for surface runoff from the car park. It was decided to develop this part of the site for a wildflower meadow, to contribute towards increasing the biodiversity of Chester District, thereby contributing towards the aims of the Corporate and Community Plans, as well as the Nature Conservation Strategy

Description
The
site covers approximately 9 acres of land 2.5 miles south of the
City Centre. A varied mix of native wildflower meadow seed
was sown in equal proportions.
The mix contains Betony, Birds foot trefoil, Yellow rattle, Devils bit scabious, Meadow buttercup, Meadow cranesbill, Ribwort plantain, Self heal, Yarrow and Cowslip, some of which are shown below.
The site has recently been mown to prevent the spread of thistles, thereby assisting in the establishment of the wildflowers.
Future plans
In
collaboration with the Broxton Barn Owl Group, Barn owl nest boxes
will be put up in suitable places around the site. The
wildflowers will eventually provide cover for small mammals thereby
providing a food source for the Barn owls. By providing
places to nest and a food source, the site will provide a habitat
in which Barn owls can thrive.
