Conservation Areas
There are approximately 2,388 Listed Buildings and 61 Conservation Areas in the District.
Conservation Areas are designated to preserve and enhance the special character of areas of architectural or historic interest. The Council has a duty to consider the designation of such areas under Section 69 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990. They are selected according to the quality of the area as a whole, including the contribution of key individual or groups of buildings, trees, open space and streetscape.

The Design and Conservation Service works on a continuous programme of improvement and enhancement schemes for conservation areas throughout the District. Work includes a range of projects ranging from enhancement of village greens to traditional resurfacing of city centre streets and the renovation of historic buildings. Work is financed by the Council's capital programme and partnership funding with central government, English Heritage (external link), the Heritage Lottery Fund (external link) and a range of private and voluntary sector organisations.
The Council's current policies in respect of conservation areas are set out in the Chester District Local Plan.
