Conservation Projects

These are some of the projects that the Building Design and Conservation Team have been involved with:

Virtual Chester

Virtual Chester was a City Council led project which provides web based learning materials about the history and development of Chester. It includes a Virtual Reality model of Chester; information about buildings on the Millennium Festival Trail and provides access to archival material held by the City Council.

This was a 2 year project which started in January 2002. The partners were:

  • Chester City Council
  • Chester Civic Trust
  • SEEN (Chester's Sustainable Environmental Education Network)
  • University of Salford, Centre for Virtual Environments

Asia Urbs

Chester City Council was the lead partner in a European funded project linking two communities in the Kathmandu Valley, Feltre in northern Italy and Chester. The project was entitled:

"Prioritising the Cultural heritage: Urban Management and Economic Diversification in the Sub-Metropolitan City of Lalitpur and the Village Development Area of Kohokana, Kingdom of Nepal".

The project involved sharing "Best Practice" in urban archaeology, building conservation and sustainable tourism. Members of the project in Nepal spent periods working in Chester and Feltre and a smaller number of return visits by Chester staff to Nepal.

In early June 2002, Chester hosted a seminar for delegates from Nepal and Italy, which covered a wide range of topics and site visits. Individual exchange visits were scheduled for the duration of the two year project which ended in December 2003.
