Garden Waste Scheme

Brown Garden Waste BinAbout the Scheme

Householders on the Garden Waste scheme receive either a brown wheeled bin or a large paper sack. The bin should be placed at the edge of your property by 7.00am on the morning of collection.  (A calendar should be delivered with the bin).  Collections will take place fortnightly between March and December and monthly between January and February.

*Plastic cannot be recycled in a composting scheme and may result in the load being rejected.  Any garden waste which will not fit into the bin will be taken however, if it is presented in cardboard boxes, paper sacks or tied up with natural string (not plastic string).

*Please put the wheeled bin at the front boundary of your property immediately adjacent to the pavement, but not on the pavement itself.

*Please put the wheeled bin out by 7.00am on the day of collection.  The time your bin is collected can change from one collection to the next.

Brown Waste BagPLEASE NOTE, not all households in the Chester area are eligible for the brown bin scheme. An alternative scheme exists specially adapted for those properties with spacial limitations. For more details of the paper sack scheme, please click the following link.

What you should put in the brown bin/paper sack

The following materials are ideal for the production of compost.

  • Leaves
  • Bark
  • Lawn Mowings
  • Plants
  • Hedge Clippings
  • Twigs and small branches
  • Cut Flowers
  • Windfalls
  • Christmas Trees (place in or alongside bin/sack if under 6ft)

This compost will be used upon agricultural land.  Its quality is of paramount importance and the possibility of contamination, especially biological, must be minimised in the food chain.  For this reason the following items must not be put in the compost bin.

Please do not put any of the following in the brown bin/paper sack

  • Plastic bags, plastic carrier bags, plastic bin liners.
  • Meat, fish, all cooked food waste, cooking fat, oil, wax or waxed packaging, foil.
  • Soil, stone, rubble or turf.
  • Paper, plastic, glass, metals, leather, porcelain, disposable nappies, dog and cat waste, ash, vacuum cleaner contents, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, batteries, dye stuffs, textiles.
  • Vegetable peelings, salad, fruit, tea, tea bags, coffee grounds and filters, egg shells, stale bread and crusts.
  • Feathers, pet straw.

What Happens Next?

The collected Garden Waste is sent to one of two sites. One site in Hapsford composts it and then sells it on. The other site is a farm in Waverton (home of the Crocky Trail) and the Garden Waste is composted and used on the farm, eliminating the need for chemical fertilizers.

What if you have difficulty moving the bin?

The Council appreciates that there may be a few residents who may be unable to move their bin and who cannot get help from another member of the family, friend or neighbour.

If you feel you need help, please contact the Call Centre on 01244 402477.

Households that have been offered the garden waste wheeled bin service will no longer be able to dispose of garden waste as part of their normal weekly refuse collection.

The wheeled bins are the property of Chester City Council.  Please look after them and do not remove them from your property.

Please do not mark the wheeled bin any way, but you may use the address label provided to identify your bin.  You will need to use a permanent marker.

Do not put domestic refuse and other recyclable materials in your bin.  Please continue to use the CHEERS scheme and your local recycling centres.

Most households will find that there is plenty of room for their compostable materials within the wheeled bin.  Excess material can be placed alongside in bundles or in cardboard boxes, but NOT in plastic bags or plastic bin liners.

The contents of your bin will be checked for quality before being used in producing compost.  If it is not garden waste, we will not collect it.
