Chester Credit Union in the City!

Following months of development, support from the Chester and District Housing Trust, and by feedback from members, Chester Credit Union has officially opened a new collection point in Chester city centre!

The collection point, based in the Chester and District Housing Trust offices in Centurion House on Northgate street, aims to provide existing and new members with a convenient collection point which can be used to join Chester Credit Union, deposit money and also hand in requests for share withdrawals and loan applications.

The collection point initially aims to be open one day a week on Mondays from 11am to 2.30pm and is the fourth collection point the Credit Union has in Chester with others being Blacon, Lache and Kingsway.

We are currently looking for more volunteers to help us run this collection point along with a range of other opportunities within our team!

First Young Savers

A Tribute to the Late Cllr John Boughton

Junior Savers

Chester Credit Union recently celebrated the signing of its first Young Savers whom will be joining to the growing ranks of citizens across the district benefiting from access to Credit Union services.

The Young Savers Account (Safekeepers) was introduced by the Chester Credit Union earlier this year and is intended not only as a safe means of saving, but more importantly as a mechanism to educate and develop greater financial literacy skills amongst the young. A recent study by the Financial Services Authority highlighted that 94% of 16 year olds believe it is important to know how to manage money, however only 53% have been taught how to.

As a fitting tribute to their late Grandfather, Cllr John Boughton, who was the founding Chairman of the Chester Credit Union, the children decided that to keep the momentum of their Grandfathers passion of supporting and encouraging young people to save by becoming the first to sign up to the scheme.

Vic Lockley Chester Credit Unions Development Officer has been working successfully with many interested junior schools in the area, to create internal school savers schemes run for the benefit of the pupils.  However, the scheme is not just restricted to schools, anyone under the age of 16 (who lives in Chester and district) is entitled to sign as a Young Saver.

Neil Jay Manager of the Chester Credit Union commented: ‘‘Since the launch of the Chester Credit Union in 2004, it has been one of my main aims to introduce a Young Savers scheme to the services we offer the citizens of Chester.  I firmly believe, that education of the benefits of saving from an early age and the handling of ones own finance is a key life skill.  Moreover, it is also important to develop an awareness of the importance of safe saving with Financial Services Authority Regulated organisations so we can avoid the catastrophe and devastation suffered by thousands when the Farepak hamper company closed late 2006.’ John Boughton was passionate about Chester Credit Union offering a Young Saver Scheme and I am delighted that his Grandchildren have decided to be the inaugural members.’’

If you would like to know more about the Young Saver Scheme offered by the Chester Credit Union, or you wish to discuss the potential to offer the service at a local junior School then contact Vic Lockley on 01244 399006.
