SEEN - Sustainable Environmental Education Network
Introducing SEEN in Chester
SEEN Chester's Sustainable Environmental Education
Network aims to involve local school children in the processes of
planning, regeneration and design which will shape the future of
their own communities.
SEEN was established by The Council, and local architectural and design professionals in 1997. It has recently been recognised as an example of good practice in an EU White Paper on Youth Policies.
Each SEEN project is very different and carefully tailored to the needs of the individual schools, teachers and the national curriculum. However, the projects undertaken are always linked to current environmental issues. Pupils and teachers become involved in 'planning for real', working alongside practicing professionals from a range of different backgrounds. The young people are encouraged to think creatively and to engage in the processes of discussion, disagreement, persuasion and compromise to work towards their own conclusions.
At the culmination of every project, the children have the opportunity to present their concerns and proposals to the people who actually make the decisions. Although not everything that they suggest can come to fruition, SEEN does take every presentation seriously.
