In the 1960s the Civic Trust - concerned at the planned changes to the fabric of Chester - asked that a photographic record be made and this was launched in 1963 with them, the Photographic Society and reps from the Museum and Library. Its aim was to prepare a house by house photo survey, the area within the walls and buildings in imminent danger to be given priority. Now the survey team of photographers (roughly about a dozen of them) are notified by the Civic Trust (and CHH)) of any buildings due for demolition that can be added to the collection on a regular basis
The collection is invaluable for studying local history, containing over 12,000 photographs of Chester streets, businesses and some buildings that no longer exist today.
